Diet and Nutrition

Balanced and Healthy, or Fast and Furious?

That is the key question to ask when considering your diet and nutrition. A balanced and healthy diet will include all of the elements for optimal nutrition.

A fast, and / or furious diet will abuse your body, usually by excluding an important aspect of nutrition. It seems that every other month there is a new fad diet that promises you'll Lose-the-Fat-in-No-Time-Flat!.

Fad Diets and Yo-Yo's

If you are considering going on a NO or LOW something diet, ask yourself if you are willing and able to live the rest of your life without that something -- be it carbs, meat protein, or whatever the diet is telling you to abstain from. If your answer to that is a realistic No, the next question is: what do you think will happen when you start re-introducing that element into your diet?

Exactly -- the weight will start coming back on, quite possibly faster and heavier, as your body tries to make up for the deprivation you've subjected it to. Soon enough, you'll be blaming that fad diet - "It didn't work, back to square one". You are now caught in the Yo-Yo effect that the fad diet industry counts on, possibly pouring money into their special brand-name diet foods and exercise equipment.

A Healthy Weight Loss Program

balanced diet
The only successful and healthy weight loss program for you is one that balances out all of your body's nutritional requirements, combined with a realistic daily regimen of some kind of physical activity that burns the calories at an equal or higher rate than you are consuming them.

You don't have to join a gym, you just need to do something for a certain amount of time each day -- and making small adjustments to things you are already doing can go a long way:

  • You already leave the house each day for work: if you live or work in a multi-story building, take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Park your car farther away from the office and walk; leave the car at home, and walk or bike all the way.
  • Take your dog and yourself for a brisk walk; instead of just throwing the toy for the dog to fetch, race him for it.
  • Just move.

Diet for Special Needs

Many people have special dietary needs due to:

  • a health condition,
  • food allergies or intolerance to certain foods,
  • cultural or religious traditions,
  • lifestyle choices based on environmental, ecological, or just personal taste.

When diets are followed for these reasons, the exclusion of certain foods and the vitamins they contain will be made up for with other acceptable foods with those vitamins, or with vitamin supplements, to maintain the proper balance for a healthy diet for that person.

Your diet and nutrition plan should be highly personal. It will depend on your age, gender and life stage, as well as your usual eating habits, your medical history, current health conditions or medication, your fitness level and regular activities, and many other lifestyle factors.

Remember: when it comes to diet and nutrition, there is no one-size-fits-all solution.
