Child Nutrition

Child nutrition contributes to both the quality of life in childhood and the long term health in later life. Millions of children throughout the world are suffering from poor nutrition due to a myriad of factors. Malnourished kids suffer decreased quality of life in childhood and recurrent health problems later.

Malnutrition is a negative health condition caused by an inadequate or unbalanced diet. Cases of malnourished children are prevalent in the world, in both developing and developed countries. Poverty and economic crisis are among of the few reasons why the statistics of child nutrition are showing increasing malnutrition despite the efforts of the governments to prevent it.

Support from different countries around the world helps poorer countries with larger numbers of malnourished kids to provide more nutritious food that can aid in bettering children’s nutrition.

In addition to food, many countries also donate vitamins, medicines, health consultation, clothing, etc. to these impoverished children.

What is Malnutrition?

Malnourished kids are suffering a severe imbalance of energy or vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. Generally, we think of malnutrition in terms of deficiency.

Deficiency can be caused by inadequate intake, increased requirements or an inability to absorb or use the nutrient, which may in turn be caused by deficient intake of another nutrient.

Overnutrition, as opposed to deficient nutrition, is also a form of malnutrition. In obesity, the imbalance is an excess of energy. Excesses in vitamin and minerals are most often caused by the overuse of vitamin and mineral supplements, rather than intake from food.

Regular checkups with a family physician or a nutritionist can help ensure your child is getting the right nutrition for their age and stage of development. Unfortunately, lack of sufficient health care is also a rampant problem related to malnutrition in children. Many families do not have access to adequate health care and are much more likely to suffer from health-related problems.

Malnourished kids also suffer threats to their immune systems. When a child’s immune system is healthy and strong, they are less likely to contract illnesses and have an easier time fighting off and healing from the ones that they do. Since children are prone to all sorts of viruses, illnesses and diseases, vaccination is extremely important in order to prevent against them.

The world is full of malnourished kids. The next time you see a picture of malnourished kids in Africa, think about sending support to an organization dedicated to eradicating poverty and malnutrition in developing countries, and then take a careful look at your child's nutrition and the foods they're eating.
